If your energy bill is too high, or you just want to improve the efficiency of your HVAC system, there is a solution. Here are five things you can do to boost the HVAC efficiency in your South Carolina home:
1. Inspect house for air leaks. If your house has leaks, then the air you're paying to cool or heat is leaking out of your home. Finding and stopping leaks will improve your system’s efficiency. The U.S. Department of Energy has important information about finding and dealing with leaks around your house.
2. Seal air ducts. Your HVAC efficiency may also be compromised by the very system that delivers your treated air. Inspect the seams at duct connections. Streaks of dirt at the seams signal that air may be leaking. Sealing these leaks with duct mastic tape – don’t use regular duct tape; it doesn’t last long – will improve efficiency.
3. Change air filters. Dirty air filters block air flow. When that happens your AC system has to work harder to deliver less energy. Replacing air filters every one to two months increases the efficiency of your HVAC system. Some air filters can be washed; read the documentation that came with your system to learn more.
4. Schedule annual maintenance. Annual AC maintenance is important for catching small problems before they become big problems. They can also fine-tune your equipment for greater efficiency. Many HVAC companies offer subscription services. This guarantees that you’ll get your annual maintenance done because you’ve paid them to remember to do it. Plus you can often get a discount on any repairs required.
5. Upgrade to a newer system. If your system is more than 15 years old, you should consider installing a new air conditioner. Newer systems are more energy efficient. Greater efficiency means you’ll be paying less each month for energy consumption. You should schedule an appointment with your HVAC provider to determine if it’s time to install a new system and what’s appropriate for you home.
