Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Where You Put One Is Important

Each year thousands of people fall victim to the colorless, odorless and lethal gas known as carbon monoxide. You can avoid toxic levels of this toxic vapor from invading your home by installing carbon monoxide detectors. It is equally important to place those detectors properly so they perform effectively and keep you and your family safe.

Installation locations for carbon monoxide detectors differ with each manufacturer, depending on the type and style.

Some instructions, however, hold true for the majority of models:

•Carbon monoxide detectors should be positioned on each level of your house, in the cellar and close to or above an attached garage.
•Detectors should be placed within 10 to 15 feet of all sleeping areas. It’s also a good idea to have one in other common areas, such as family or living rooms and hallways. The units should be below bed height so the gas is detected before anyone is injured.
•Carbon monoxide detectors can be mounted on the ceiling or walls.
•Detectors should be in rooms with a furnace or any fuel burning source, such as heating or cooking appliances. However, don't set them too close since sometimes these appliances emit trace amounts of CO that may set off the alarm.
•Avoid placing carbon monoxide detectors in bathrooms or close to humid or steamy areas.
•Detectors should be out of reach of young children and pets.
•Carbon monoxide detectors should not be near open windows, air conditioners, ceiling fans, fresh air returns or heating vents.
•Detectors shouldn’t be blocked by draperies or other obstacles. They should be easy to see and hear if they are activated.
•Keep detectors out of direct sunlight or places where the temperature can be extreme, like porches, unfinished attics and crawlspaces.
•Carbon monoxide detectors should be at least five feet away from household cleaners.
