Changing Your Air Filter Regularly Should Be First On Your List

When it comes to taking care of your air conditioner, changing your air filter regularly should be at the top of your “to do” list. Performing this simple task will guarantee that your system is running smoothly and efficiently. Start out by checking the filter every three months (or at whatever frequency the manufacturer recommends). If it still looks relatively clean, check back in another month. It won’t be long before you know how often your particular filter needs to be replaced.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a clean air filter can reduce your energy consumption up to 15 percent.

Here are some other reasons why changing your air filter routinely makes good sense.

    •    Air conditioning systems are designed to perform with a certain degree of efficiency. Each one also has a distinct rate of air flow that is required to cool your home. A dirty air filter not only diminishes the effectiveness of your air conditioner, it also hinders air flow. Consequently, your system is forced to use more energy and work harder to do its job.
    •    Any airborne impurities, contaminants, dust and insects trapped by your air conditioner will end up in the air filter. If not changed routinely, your filter will get plugged and the pollutants will find their way into the air. They also can attach themselves to any of the air conditioner’s moving components, hoses and electrical connections, potentially causing your system to malfunction.
    •    Changing your air filter consistently extends the life of your air conditioner and saves on expensive repairs and service calls.
    •    A clean air filter will prevent back-pressure that can put an extra burden on the blower motor. The undue strain will cause the motor to work harder and use more energy.
