Insulation Factors That Are Essential To Your Comfort And Savings

Insulation prevents heat from seeping in or out of your home, keeping it warmer in winter and cooler in summer while conserving energy. There are a number of factors to be aware of when you consider your home's insulation:

Types of insulation. There are four basic types in the marketplace: rolls and batts, loose fill, spray in foam, and foam panels. Materials include natural and man-made substances: fiberglass, vermiculite, urethane, mineral wool, polyester, and concrete board. If you are building or renovating, consider the insulating features of the materials and techniques to be used. Concrete block or stone walls can act as insulators and stop the transfer of heat while metal will transfer heat easily.

Existing structures need different treatments than new construction or homes under renovation. Batting can be applied easily to unfinished walls; loose fill or spray-in-foam can be used in finished walls.

The R-value, or resistance to heat flow, must also be considered. The higher the R-value the greater the resistance. The U.S. Department of Energy's zip code calculator will help you see what R-factor is desirable in attics, interior and exterior walls and floors here in South Carolina.

Proper installation is important. Tight sealing prevents energy leaks; it's  the first step. Ensure insulation fits snugly, is not compressed, and is applied according to instructions.  Use foils and vapor barriers correctly.

Payback is how long it will take for your insulation investment to pay for itself in energy savings. Calculations take into consideration the climate, insulation R-factor, your home design and more. Software and online tools can help with this.

An energy assessment to evaluate your current insulation provides valuable planning information.  If you live in a newer home, your builder may have this information. An energy audit measures home size, existing insulation, and considers climate and other factors.
