Tankless Water Heaters Have Benefits Beyond Just The Smaller Size

One of the key advantages of tankless water heaters is their very small size, which makes them ideal for smaller homes, additions and apartments. Even so, this is just one of the many benefits you can take advantage of by choosing a tankless heater over a traditional hot-water storage tank.

First, tankless units have the potential to save you a great deal of money on energy costs. Regular water heaters store hot water in a large tank or reservoir, and you have to pay for the electricity or natural gas that was used to heat it in the first place -- and then heat it again. Tankless water heaters, on the other hand, heat water on demand, rather than pre-heating it and leaving it to sit in a tank. This advantage alone can save you as much as 30 percent on your water heating costs.

Tankless models also have much longer lifespans than tank-based water heaters. On average, a tank water heater lasts about 10 years; tankless units usually last at least twice that long, sometimes even longer. They are also cheaper to maintain, saving you money on both repair and replacement costs.

You can get electric-, natural gas- or propane-powered tankless water heaters, and newer models can even be charged using solar power technology to help you save even more on your energy costs. If you're going to take advantage of solar power to fuel your tankless water heater, it's a good idea to have a backup in place in case your solar cells run out of charge on a cloudy day.
