Why A Ventilation Plan Is So Important To Your Comfort

The benefits of good home ventilation are too important to ignore. Proper air circulation and replacement reduce airborne pollutants and allergens, relieving allergy sufferers of their symptoms and improving the overall air quality of your home. Properly ventilating your home can also help you control humidity levels, creating a more comfortable living environment and helping you avoid the risk of structural damage caused by excess moisture. It also prevents the buildup of potentially deadly gases, including radon and carbon monoxide.

A complete home ventilation plan should include the following:
•   Dedicated exhaust fans in rooms that are exposed to high levels of humidity, such as bathrooms and laundry rooms
•   Whole-house fans that assist in the circulation of air throughout each storey of your home
•   Opening windows along air circulation routes to allow stale air to leave and fresh air to enter
•   Clean ducts that are free of dust, pollutants and allergens
•   Vents in your crawl space which can be opened in summer and closed in winter to prevent heat transfer
Remember, too, that while weather stripping, caulking and insulation can all help you save energy by inhibiting the transfer of heat between the indoor and the outdoors, it's possible to tighten up your house too much. This can set back your efforts to properly ventilate the space.
