Why A Whole-House Humidifier Makes Sense

Dry air in your home can be an ongoing problem, especially during the winter. It can eventually cause damage to your home, warping floors, paneling and even furniture. Dry air also brings with it many uncomfortable physical symptoms, including itchy skin, irritated eyes, nosebleeds and scratchy throat. It can also lead to a variety of respiratory problems and breathing difficulties.

Dry air also tends to make you feel colder than the actual temperature of the room you’re in. This is because dry air absorbs moisture from your skin. As that moisture is drawn away from your body, it produces a cooling effect similar to what you feel when sweat evaporates on your skin. Even if you have your heating system set to a relatively high temperature, dry air will make you feel colder than you would expect at that temperature.

An effective way to relieve these problems is to install a whole-house humidification system. A whole-house humidifier is installed directly into your forced-air heating system. As air flows through the heating system, the whole-house humidifier adds moisture by spraying minute amounts of water vapor into the conditioned air inside your heating system. This heated and moistened air travels through the supply ductwork and exits from the numerous vents and registers, increasing humidify levels as it warms areas throughout your house.

A whole-house humidifier makes sense as a way to both improve your comfort level and to reduce your heating expenses. When your home’s humidity level is higher, the evaporation of moisture from your skin decreases. This allows you to feel comfortable when the room is at a lower temperature. You can turn down your furnace and save money – just a three-degree drop can save 5 percent on your annual heating bills. Added moisture also relieves physical discomforts caused by dry skin, sinuses and respiratory systems.
