How HVAC Ductwork Design and Configuration Plays A Role In Heating Efficiency

Without an efficient pathway for heated air to travel from your furnace or heat pump to your home, even the largest and most efficient heating system will be unable to keep your indoor spaces at the temperature you desire. A well-designed ductwork system provides that necessary pathway. However, if the duct network is poorly configured, it will substantially decrease heating efficiency and increase waste of both energy and money.

If your ductwork is configured incorrectly for your home’s particular design, it can restrict the flow of heated air to points in your house, resulting in rooms or entire areas that are too hot or too cold. If the ducts extend through an uninsulated or unheated area of your home and are not well-insulated themselves, they can lose large amounts of energy from openings at loose connections or even through the thin metal of the ductwork itself.

There are several different duct configurations, but in residential applications, the most common patterns are the “radial” and the “trunk and branch” designs. In the radial configuration, the furnace or heat pump sits in the center, and supply and return ducts extend outward from the unit, like the spokes of a tire. In a trunk and branch design, large ducts extend straight out from the main heating unit (the trunk). Smaller supply and return ducts are attached to those larger ducts, forming many “branches” of ductwork.

These designs may not be sufficient to supply conditioned air to all parts of your home. If there are undersized ducts or too many “Y” branches, or if the ducts have been damaged, heating system performance will decrease. An HVAC expert can help you calculate your home’s necessary air flow, determine the efficiency of your ductwork, and decide if another configuration would be more efficient.
