Repair Or Replace? Let Comfort Services help make the right decision

Colder weather is coming soon to South Carolina, and you need to be sure that your heating equipment will make it through the winter.  If you experienced any sort of comfort problems last winter, you may be trying to figure out if you should repair or replace your heating system.  You don’t want to waste money on repairs that won’t last long, and you certainly don’t want to make a major investment in a new system if it's unnecessary.  Ask yourself the following questions to figure out which route will be most cost-effective and keep you and your family warm all season long:

How old is your furnace?

If it's over 15 years old, most experts would recommend replacing it.  Modern equipment can generate improved comfort results with just a fraction of the energy.  Your energy costs can be reduced up to 50 percent, savings that can build up over time to help offset the cost of the upgrade.

What is the AFUE of your furnace?

AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) measures the efficiency of a furnace.  High-efficiency heating equipment starts at 90 percent AFUE.  If your equipment is rated below that, an upgrade could help you create substantial energy savings.

Are you planning to move soon?

If you're planning to sell your home within the next two years, having a new HVAC system installed in your home can raise its resale value.  You will need to crunch the numbers before making a decision but it could end up being a wise purchase.

How often do you use your air system?

Furnaces used in the South will last longer than they would in say, Detroit.  The average lifespan of a furnace is 15 years, and because the climate here is rather moderate, you should expect to get about that many years out of yours.  Be sure to service it regularly to extend its longevity.
