Air Conditioning and Heating Systems - Split and Packaged
Air conditioning
and heating systems come in a variety of 'flavors' that have their own
unique advantages and disadvantages. The two main types of home HVAC
systems are split systems and packaged systems with split systems being
the most common.
Many people think that air conditioners and heaters
bring in air from the outside and either cool or heat depending on the
season. The reality is that the system brings the air from inside and
heats or cools it before returning it back into the house. Split and
packaged systems work differently to provide the same effect. Both
operate under the following principals:
- The compressor compresses cool Freon gas, causing it to become hot, high-pressure Freon gas.
- This hot gas runs through a set of coils so it can dissipate its heat, and it condenses into a liquid.
- The Freon liquid runs through an expansion valve, and in the process it evaporates to become cold, low-pressure Freon gas (light blue in the diagram above).
- This cold gas runs through a set of coils that allow the gas to absorb heat and cool down the air inside the building.
A split air conditioning system has two components while a packaged system is compacted into one unit. The split system has an outdoor metal cabinet, or condensing unit, that contains the condensing coil and compressor. It also has an indoor cabinet that contains the evaporator coil and blower that sends the cool or warm air through the ducts. A packaged system is typically installed outside in one space saving system.
