The Basics to Solar Thermal
Simply stated, Solar Thermal is a great way to heat water and the things that water heats! It operates from a collector which is a box with copper piping that sits on your roof and collects heat from the sun. It then transfers the heat to the water that runs through the piping. This new heated water fills your storage tank, and acts as a pre-heater to your existing water heater. The difference between heating water for in-home use verse heating your pool water is that the newly heated water coming from your piping will actually flow directly into your pool. It’s kinda like filling up multiple hundreds if not thousands of pitchers of hot water and dumping it into your pool. Kinda!
The two main types of solar water heating systems are Active and Passive systems. The Active systems contain pumps and controls to regulate the flow and production of the hot water while the Passive systems actually operate without the use of pumps.
